Craniosacral: It’s all in your head

What is Craniosacral?

Craniosacral is one of the great health revelations of modern times.  The goal of “Cranio” is to improve the functioning of your brain and spinal cord. In turn, “Cranio” reduces negative effects of stress and enhances your general health and resistance to disease.  The Diagram of the cranial system craniosacral system consists of fluids and membranes that surround and protect the spinal cord.  It includes bones all the way from the skull (cranio-) to the tailbone (-sacral).  An imbalance in this system can result in sensory, motor and neurological dysfunctions.

Where Did It Come From?

In the early 20th century, Dr. William Sutherland, an American Osteopath, first observed that the sutures of the skull are actually joints and can facilitate movement. He also noted the rhythmic tidal motions of the body, and that any restrictions to the natural psychological movement will lead to reduced function in an area.  Later on, in the 1970s, Dr. John Upledger was participating in a surgical operation, and he found it very difficult to hold the spinal membrane still.  He noticed a rhythmic pattern of movement at 8-10 cycles per minute.  This experience led to Upledger’s development of Craniosacral Therapy.

How Does It Benefit You?

The goal of the therapy is to improve spinal flexibility and to relieve stress on the nervous system, therefore improving general health and wellbeing.  Fascia is the single structure that holds together every part of the body in a functional relationship; it consists of ligaments and all the membranous material that surround and connect all organs, bones, and muscles.  Inflammation can cause the free sliding fascia surrounding the spinal cord to bind together, and may lose flexibility due to mechanical inhibition, or from a toxic, malnourished environment.  Under tension, it is always trying to pull the body back to its natural state of ease.   Craniosacral has the potential to relieve the body’s seemingly unrelated distortions.  Upledger noted that the body knows in full detail and complete accuracy what it needs to do and what assistance it needs to return to that state of wellbeing.

AnBaby receiving craniosacral therapyyone can benefit from this treatment during any stage of life.  During a session, the therapist very lightly monitors the individual’s rhythm to detect restrictions and imbalances.  The client remains comfortable and in control, experiencing  a deep state of relaxation.  The practitioner cradles the brain and spinal cord to relieve any undue pressure.  Slight sensations of heat, tingling, or pulsation during the session is normal.  You will leave your session with a feeling of ease and relaxation long after the appointment has closed.  Craniosacral is the tool that enables the body to “re-set”’ itself and maintain its highest level of health possible.  Please contact us for more information on how to book a session with us at the Best Body Co.
