How to care for your curly hair

Anyone who has had curly hair knows how hard it can be to take care of, especially when you have a vision of how you want your curls to look. We are here to help. Here are some tips that may be helpful when taking care of your hair.

Hair wash cycles

When you have curly hair, it is important to realize your hair may not need to be washed daily; only wash it when needed. Repeatedly washing your curls can leave your hair dry, frizzy, and hard to manage. If you have thick, curly hair, your hair doesn’t need to be washed daily or even weekly. However, keeping your scalp healthy is important, so washing your hair a minimum of every two to three weeks is very important. If you have long and thick hair, washing it in sections can reduce damage or tangling. Make sure you are using a moisturizing shampoo that is formulated for curly hair. If you use any form of gels, oils, creams, or pomades to style your hair, consider using a clarifying shampoo before your moisturizing shampoo. Also, to preserve your hair between washes, use a shower cap when showering.

Curly hair is drier than other hair types, so it is important to keep it moisturized. Make sure you condition all your hair, not just the very ends. Apply a thick layer of conditioner after washing your hair. Add oil or leave-in conditioner after you have finished washing and conditioning your hair to assist with moisturizing your curls. If your hair is very dry or if you have trouble detangling it before shampooing, you can also apply conditioner before washing your hair. When choosing the right conditioner for your curls, make sure you look for one that contains ingredients such as argan oil, glycerin, or a fatty alcohol like cetyl or stearyl alcohol.

Scalp health

When going a long time between washes, you can have a buildup of dandruff due to the overproduction of oil on your scalp. Dandruff shampoo can help dry your hair; apply anti-dandruff shampoo only to the scalp. When applying the dandruff shampoo, allow it to sit for two to ten minutes, or the time listed on the label, before rinsing. Then, use a moisturizing shampoo on the rest of your hair. If you get dandruff, a board-certified dermatologist can also prescribe medicine to apply to your scalp.

Detangle your hair

If you can curly hair, you know how easily your hair knots up. To detangle your hair in between washes, wet your hair thoroughly and apply a leave-in conditioner. When applying a leave-in conditioner, detangle your hair with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb and/or brush designed for curly or coily hair. Working in sections with your hair makes it easier to detangle your hair. Avoid brushing your hair while it is drying to prevent your hair from breaking and frizzing. Make sure to detangle while you are washing your hair, too.

Sun protection

We all know the sun can be harmful to your skin, but a lot of people don’t know that the sun can be harmful to your curls. Heat and the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays can dry out your curls and create some unwanted frizz. To protect your curls, keep your hair moisturized during the warmer seasons and cover up with a wide-brimmed hat.

Sleep care

When sleeping, you can pull your hair into a loose ponytail on your head or a loose braid before sleeping to preserve your curls and reduce friction against your pillowcase. It will help prevent frizzy hair and the breaking of your hair.

Trial and error is the best advice for creating a solid routine for your curls that you are happy with. Don’t feel discouraged if a certain product doesn’t work right for your hair or if you have a bad hair day; it is all part of the process.
