What is CranioSacral Therapy?
Our central nervous system is encased in protective bone from the cranium (skull housing the brain) down to the sacrum at the base of the spine. Within this craniosacral system lies a walled membrane or sac containing the spinal fluid that flows up the spine and cushions the brain. This fluid is pumped by a rhythmic flexing of the sacrum and coccyx (tail bone) upward into the cranium in waves or pulses.
Healthy pulsing in the craniosacral system contributes to the proper functioning of the brain and central nervous system. This includes the five senses:
- Thought processes
- Other physiological and emotional functions
The body’s ability to heal itself is also partially dependent upon the healthy pulsing of spinal fluid. A relatively new addition to complementary healing, CranioSacral Therapy is a technique in which this pulsing is sensed and any abnormalities or interruptions in its rhythm is corrected. Injuries, illness, poor posture, all can affect the flow of spinal fluid and the layers of the sac that contains it.
Initially, any injury to this system may not immediately result in symptoms of pain or dysfunction. The craniosacral system is resilient and can adapt around an injury sometimes up to many years. At a certain point, however, the resilience wears thin and pain or other symptoms of dysfunction begin to manifest in the area.
The following symptoms may be aided by craniosacral therapy sessions:
- Sinusitis or congestion
- Body pains
- Accident-related problems
- Digestive, or eliminating difficulties
- Slow healing
- Recurring pain that does not heal
Since it is not yet recognized by the mainstream medical community, damage to the craniosacral system is not considered as a source or cause of pain. Current diagnostic procedures do not include this system. The CranioSacral therapist uses a light, sensitive touch to detect the pulse along the spine and around the head, also out the limbs. You lie comfortably on a table, fully clothed, during the session. CranioSacral Therapy is deeply relaxing and, because it enhances the body’s ability to heal itself, the entire body experiences an increased state of health and well-being
